Bacon, Popper or Polanyi? The philosophy of modern experimental biology and the impact of the big data revolution
Using historical case studies dealing with research on fundamental questions related to development and heredity from the 19th to the 21st century, the paper (i) examines researchers’ underlying epistemologies with a focus on induction, critical theory testing, commitment to scientific belief, and epistemic authority; (ii) analyzes the extent to which postmodernism and the availability of big genomic sequencing data have been changing the conventional epistemologies.
