On the Usefulness of Kuhn's Concept of Scientific Revolution for Understanding the History of Biology
Thomas Kuhn's book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" (1962) was one of the most cited academic books of all time. According to Kuhn, science enjoys periods of stable growth - paradigm-guided "normal science" - punctuated by periods of revolutions that are not designed by rational debates and not objectively progressive. A look at major innovations in the history of biology shows that their causes and trajectories were different from each other and that Kuhn's categories of scientific revolution are rarely applicable. They were often driven by technological advances and had a rational basis. The history of biology shows that paradigms can be compared and that the idea of reality as the judge of good and bad science is by no means obsolete.
